The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.
In this role, the intern has opportunities to learn hands-on how the Marketing and Communications team shares the Association’s mission by promoting our community events, research, programs, and cause initiatives to drive fundraising and achieve heart health for all. The internship will provide an opportunity to collaborate with teams across the Marketing and Communications, Development, and Community Impact departments and throughout the American Heart Association.

Internship Overview
Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
Internship Duration: 1/26/26 – 5/1/26
Location: Hybrid - Intern must be based in Houston, TX, or the immediate surrounding area.
Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities
- Assist in drafting a wide variety of Marketing Communications materials to promote campaigns, events and programs (e.g., resource links, internal tools, photos, or other multimedia, etc.).
- Collaborating and assisting the marketing communications lead in planning and executing the marketing and communications efforts to promote via earned media or paid media strategies, programs, campaigns and initiatives.
- Provide ideas to support strategic marketing, public relations, and corporate communications.
- Research potential media collaborators and opportunities to advance the Association’s priorities.
- Assist in coordinating and communicating with event staff
- Day of event assistance to the Director of Communications
- Shot lists, photo receipt and organization
- Assist in event coordination
- Assistance in all meeting preparation
Qualifications
- Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, public relations, public health, social sciences, or marketing interested in non-profit and/or healthcare communications.
- Knowledge of business letter writing format, style, and protocol
- Demonstrated effective one-on-one and group communications skills and comfortable working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
- Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
- Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, and Canva.
- Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi connection and reliable transportation.
- Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm, with additional weekday evening events, and some weekend events TBD.
