Department Summary
The School of Business Advising Office is a team-focused work environment with approximately 12 advisors and support staff. Our priority is to provide accurate and effective assistance to students and campus partners in a timely manner. With a student population of approximately 4,000 business undergraduates, our office is a great fit for those who want to stay engaged year-round in student-centered service and who bring a positive attitude with strong technical skills.

Advises students on academic matters, such as course selection and degree requirements, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality to ensure students reach academic, personal, and professional success.
Within the School of Business, the Academic Advisor will provide accurate, detailed information to students regarding degree progress and completion using in-person or virtual formats. We use a custom-built database system to track and monitor student progress, and accurate record-keeping is an essential component of the position. Our office values positive student interactions and timely responses, while serving a large student population through traditional academic advising and flipped academic advising formats. Advisors are also a key part of orientation for new students and record-keeping and degree certification processes.
Examples of Work Performed
- The successful candidate for this position support students in the School of Business Administration by providing information to students and potential students concerning admission requirements, degree requirements, course selection, and related functions by utilizing undergraduate and graduate catalogs as well as other information.
- This person also interfaces with academic areas and applicable administrative offices to ensure compliance with current requirements and academic policies.
- They maintain student records in order to monitor student academic progress throughout their degree programs using University database systems, custom-created database systems, and extensive use of Excel spreadsheets.
- Finally, they assist recruiting, verification of transfers, and other related or similar duties as required.
Essential Functions
These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.
- Receives, processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
- Serves as a main point of contact for students providing basic organizational information about educational options, academic requirements and institutional resources and addressing their needs.
- Counsels students in identifying and assessing their interests, skills and values to match appropriate fields of study and career options and refers students to appropriate institutional resources.
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records according to program policies.
- Advises students and potential students concerning admission requirements, degree requirements, course selection, and related functions.
- Communicates with various offices to ensure compliance with current academic requirements and procedures.
- Participates in activities associated with the monitoring academic progress, registration of students, and maintenance of student record files
