About the role

Position Definition:

The VMU Director has broad program responsibilities for the Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) at two sites, the main Ft. Miley campus and the Mission Bay campus. The VMU Director is responsible for designing, planning, developing, and directing the administrative and operational activities of this large and complex research program. On a daily basis the VMU Director exercises the full range of authority required to perform such activities (in support of the research program) including research oversight; project review and processing; compliance with regulatory requirements; training of staff in regulations and procedures, budgetary planning and financial management; personnel management and utilization; space management; construction and renovation identification and coordination; acquisition and material management; and liaison with VACO, NCIRE, UCSF, other VA facilities, granting agencies, regulatory bodies and a wide variety of other institutions or individuals.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Provide technical and managerial oversight over the entire Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) at both the Ft. Miley and Mission Bay campuses
  • Perform strategic planning and resource allocation in support of the ACUP
  • Perform complex budget planning and implementation
  • Conduct negotiation and establishment of contracts
  • Develop and revise local policy
  • Provide oversight of the surgical program for large and small animals housed within the VMU.
  • Train and supervise staff doing procedures
  • Ensure that both the ACUP and VMU facility remain fully compliant with all applicable regulatory policies, procedures, and guidelines, including AAALAC accreditation
  • Adhere to information security and storage requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

Job Requirements:

  • Previous experience in animal care and research
  • Adherence to information security requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail

     

    Working Conditions/Environment:

    The work environment is a biomedical research facility. It may include minor annoyances such as noise, temperature variations, etc. The incumbent may be required to sustain standing and seated postures and to use a computer keyboard and display monitor for prolonged periods.

     

    The base salary range for this position is $44.79 - $81.25 per hour. The base salary actually offered to a successful candidate will take into account various relevant and non-discriminatory business factors including, without limitation, the candidate’s geographic location, job-related experience, knowledge, and skills, and education, as well as internal equity considerations. A successful candidate may also be eligible to earn additional compensation including bonuses.
