The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership, direction and support to the US Risk Managed East Region Public D&O underwriting team. Uses established understanding of business dynamics and regulations to achieve results while collaborating effectively with colleagues around the country. Possesses strong strategic thinking, creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Executes business strategy, leads change, drives results, promotes enterprise culture, maximizes individual and organizational performance, communicates effectively, and influences others.

What you'll be doing:

• Responsible for underwriting, growth and retention of new and renewal business for the region and assigned product line group that is consistent with underwriting strategies.
• Ensure a quality underwriting work product is produced consistent with letters of authority, underwriting strategy, standards, and process.
• Assist with product strategy, communication and execution.  
• Adhere to the rules, rates, forms, authority and underwriting guidelines as delegated by Product Line Leadership group
• Recruit, train, develop and mentor underwriting talent, including building a staff capable of effectively carrying out assignments and specific goals and recommends effective personal actions when needed.
• Forward-facing to key external broker partners and clients.
• Drive results through effective communication and leadership.
• Acts as a knowledge expert within the company on industry trends related to assigned products and works with the product line leaders to determine best practices in the market.
• Drive accountability across our initiatives within the Retail/Wholesale Platforms and across all Territories/Regions in the US.
• Assist in the development and implementation of new products.
• Work within our governance framework to ensure compliance.
• Maintains an understanding of all Markel products, services and solutions and initiates discussions with other business units as appropriate.

 

What we're looking for:

• 10+ years Professional Liability insurance underwriting experience. 
• Bachelor’s degree in business or related field from an accredited University/College.
• Broad understanding of claims, product development, regulatory and compliance functions.
• Strong Retail and Wholesale broker relationships.
• Strong interpersonal and management skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and excellent negotiation skills.
• Demonstrated aptitude to manage people and projects.
• Strong analytical skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities.
• Proven ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
