Job Summary
SummaryThe Medical Assistant is responsible for patient care activities that include but are not limited to obtaining vital signs, obtaining blood specimens, and assisting nursing and medical staff in performing invasive and non-invasive procedures, such as bone marrow aspirates.
Indirect patient care activities include those that support clinic operations such as ordering and stocking clinical supplies and patient education materials, transporting patients and specimens as needed, and monitoring the environment of care. The position requirements include organizational skills with attention to detail, thoroughness, practical decision-making, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to teamwork.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to Practice Manager and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
Establish rapport with patients and families from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
-Communicate patient and family difficulties and concerns to appropriate staff.
-Maintain patient safety, privacy, confidentiality, and follow guidelines under HIPAA.
-Provide care based on age-specific needs of patient.
-Involve interpreter services as necessary.
-Greet patients and families promptly in a welcoming and courteous manner.
-Follow CDH policy when treating and greeting patients by verbally confirming patients’ two identifiers.
-Respond promptly and courteously to requests for assistance by patients, families, visitors and staff.
-Provide clear and accurate information.
-Assist patients as needed responding to special needs such as wheelchairs, etc.
-Obtain and record vital signs, pain screen, weights, and heights accurately in appropriate Electronic Medical Record.
-Report changes and/or abnormalities in vital signs, unusual findings, and changes in patient’s condition to the nursing/medical staff in a timely manner.
-Obtain specimens (urine, stool, sputum, etc.) and/or instruct patients/family members in collecting specimens.
-Assist nursing and medical staff with procedures as requested.
-Obtain vital signs before and after each procedure and gathers appropriate paperwork.
-Collaborate with ancillary and medical staff in preparing the patient and family for procedures and treatments through verbal explanation, emotional support, and sharing educational materials.
-Demonstrate proficiency in technical skills, e.g., phlebotomy, (adapting technique as necessary for various age groups) and slide preparation as applicable.
-Perform activities related to efficient clinic operations and patient flow:
-Manage room assignments in order to maintain patient flow.
-Strategize the day’s workload and make recommendations to doctors and others accordingly.
-Have ability to manage walk-in patients and wait times when assigning rooms.
-Partner with MD’s, Nurses and other clinic assistants to discuss assignments room flow.
-Monitor waiting room and inform patients of delays, escort patients to appropriate exam room and or infusion area.
-Transport patients, medical records, specimens, blood components, equipment and supplies in accordance with CDH policy.
-Ensure that all clinical areas have an adequate stock of medical supplies, equipment, and patient education materials.
-Obtain and order supplies and equipment when needed.
-Ensure that supplies are adequate and equipment is in proper working
