Assistant Head of Middle School for Student Life (2026-2027)

Reporting to the Head of Middle School, you will play a critical role in shaping the student experience by fostering restorative practices, supervising student life staff, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure consistency and excellence across all aspects of middle school life.
Classification: Full-Time, 10 ½ month position

What You'll Do
Lead with Vision & Heart
- Cultivate a positive, inclusive school culture that reflects Lovett's mission and Core Values
- Champion restorative practices that balance accountability with dignity, growth, and student engagement
- Monitor student morale and behavior trends, using insights to inform leadership decisions and enhance the student experience
Develop & Oversee Programs
- Design and implement student-centered programming including orientations, off-campus trips, assemblies, and leadership initiatives
- Manage school-wide routines such as arrival, dismissal, transitions, and recess to ensure efficiency, safety, and a sense of belonging
- Partner with school leadership to create cohesive, developmentally appropriate experiences for all middle school students
Support & Supervise
- Supervise and mentor two Middle School Deans, providing strategic oversight and professional development while delegating daily operational and disciplinary responsibilities
- Support teachers in building structured, responsive classroom environments through training on restorative discipline, conflict resolution, and brain-based classroom management
Communicate & Collaborate
- Ensure consistent communication of behavioral expectations across students, faculty, and families
- Build effective partnerships with various school constituencies through clear, compassionate communication
- Use data-driven decision-making to refine policies, improve professional development, and strengthen school culture
Stay Connected to Students
- Teach a maximum of two classes (or equivalent), maintaining direct engagement with students and staying grounded in the daily experience of middle school life

You understand that adolescence is a time of profound growth and change, and you are skilled at creating environments where students feel seen, heard, and supported. You lead with empathy, communicate with clarity, and bring a collaborative spirit to everything you do.
You bring:
- Deep passion for middle school students and strong knowledge of their developmental needs
- The ability to read emotions, shift perspectives, and actively listen
- A commitment to restorative practices and relationally based accountability
- Strong supervisory, management, and leadership skills with the ability to delegate wisely and mentor effectively
- Experience leading educational change and implementing data-driven decision-making
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree (graduate degree preferred)
- Minimum five years of experience in middle school teaching and/or school administration
- Experience implementing restorative practices and relationally based accountability systems
- Knowledge of best practices in brain-based, developmentally appropriate classroom management
- Technological literacy in communication and database systems, social media, and educational technology
- Proven ability to communicate clearly and build effective partnerships with diverse constituencies
Preferred:
- Experience in an independent school setting
- Demonstrated success in leading educational change initiatives
