About the role

Our partner is seeking an Associate Director of Research in Arlington, VA, to contribute to the mission of making ALS a livable disease for everyone until a cure is found. This role involves grant management of programs related to social science and the Managing ALS portfolio, covering topics such as quality of care, assistive technology, health equity, economics, infrastructure/capacity building, and disease prevention. The Associate Director will oversee various grantmaking activities, from concept development to award evaluation.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, solicit, review, and manage a portfolio of ALS research aligning with the Association's scientific and strategic goals.
  • Implement new research initiatives, especially in the Managing ALS portfolio, covering aspects like quality of life, assistive technology, telehealth/telemedicine, real-world evidence, family/caregiver burden, infrastructure development, and public health interventions.
  • Make presentations to scientific, clinical, policy, and lay audiences about ALS research progress.
  • Assist the development team in fundraising for new programs and initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with research leaders and organizations in the ALS field, attending scientific meetings, and meeting with applicants, awardees, and potential donors.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in public health, health services research, clinical sciences, epidemiology, or a related medical/health-related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with organizations focused on scientific and medical advancements, including academic institutions, clinical trial sites, pharmaceutical industry, government agencies, or non-profit organizations.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and databases, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for both internal and external audiences.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, capable of handling diverse assignments.
  • Ability to multitask, establish priorities, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team player with the ability to build working relationships internally and externally.
  • Willingness to travel within the US and/or locally as requested.
