Electrical Packaging Designers at Collins work directly with Packaging Engineers in the product groups to produce 3-D models and 2-D layout drawings of our electronic control units.  Models and layouts show the complete definition of all components with consideration for manufacture and assembly.  Our Designers are also responsible for creating and maintaining a complete bill of materials, using existing components where possible, to document the full and complete design.   Ultimately, the Packaging Designer and detail drafters will document the components within the product assembly with detailed dimensioned drawings to support the manufacture of individual parts.

Electrical Packaging Designers will be expected to conform to Collins Electric Power Systems procedures, standards, norms and methods used in modeling so the documented design can be reviewed, analyzed and released in a manner consistent with established practice.

To support our customers on their high priority programs, there may be occasional need for weekend or extended hours work.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create Proposal Outlines and Layouts for customers
  • Create Proposal Envelope Solids in customer preferred formats
  • Contribute to estimating activities
  • Work with product line engineering for initial 2D concept of product
  • Create solid model piece parts and housings in NX
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure correct fit and alignment
  • Create assemblies in NX.
  • Create Layout and Balloon Sheets
  • Create Layout Parts List
  • Create dimensioned detail component drawings
  • Lead detailing drafters in the completion of component drawings for a design project
  • Execute Collins Standard Work using Design Standard Features and Design Guide Book as appropriate to complete the task
  • Perform all technical work within the Teamcenter PLM environment
  • Investigate and improve, with engineering, current product design issues
  • Contribute to product and process continuous improvement activities
  • Support and participate in engineering design reviews
  • Support stress and thermal analyses as required and requested by engineering
  • Work with Collins product definition and support groups, assist as required
  • Commit to and meet program deadlines
  • Status team regularly on task performance and completion

Electrical Packaging Designers are expected to interface directly with Collins engineering staff in the design and development of product and/or test equipment.  Individuals may be required to coordinate and interface with engineering and design or drafting personnel in other Collins divisions throughout the world.   Accordingly, good interpersonal communication skills and willingness to operate within a diverse and global workforce are mandatory.  The candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment, comprehend and implement oral and written inputs.

Strict adherence to the design process is mandatory for successful realization of Collins product for our demanding customers.  Attention to detail is critical to ensure a safe and reliable product is placed into service

Qualifications/Experience Needed:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the design of complex assemblies or enclosures with many constituent components
  • Experience with Siemens NX
  • Manufacturing experience
