Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Butler University
IN, United States, United Statesfull_timeVerifiedPosted 22 Jan 2026

About the role

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and the Program in Neuroscience invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy position beginning in August 2026. The area of specialization is philosophy of neuroscience, philosophy of science or philosophy of mind. The teaching load is four courses (12 credit hours) per semester.

Candidates must have at least a master’s degree in philosophy; a PhD by the time of appointment is preferred. The successful candidate will be an experienced teacher with demonstrated abilities to teach both upper and lower division undergraduate courses. Inclusive and evidence-based pedagogy is expected at Butler University. Please indicate your previous experience with and commitment to these practices in your cover letter.

While the exact teaching schedule is negotiable and will depend upon the candidate’s background, we have needs for teaching in philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. The candidate will also support our core curriculum, including introductory philosophy courses, critical thinking courses, and courses in Butler’s first year seminar program. Because this position needs to support our rapidly growing neuroscience program, philosophers with interests/expertise in neuroscience are especially encouraged to apply. For more information about the Neuroscience Program, see http://www.butler.edu/arts-sciences/neuroscience. · Contact information for at least 3 references

The cover letter and CV can be uploaded individually. All other materials should be submitted as a single PDF. Finalists will be required to submit official transcripts and to undergo a background check.
