HIRING RANGE: $60 per hour

This position is supplementary to and will be hired in conjunction with both the Variable HCA Art Instructor and Variable HCA Dance Instructor positions. Please apply to either of the aforementioned positions before proceeding with this application.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Lakewood Cultural Center is seeking instructors to teach in-school outreach workshops starting in the 2024-2025 school year in the following categories:

  • Linocut and gyotaku printmaking

  • Shibori dying

  • Traditional Mexican crafts (Milagros and Dia de los Muertos crafts)

  • General art education

  • Dance and movement for youth

  • Hip Hop

Our ideal instructor is invested in sharing their passion for art or dance and is self-motivated, well-organized, flexible and creative. A person who loves helping children to explore their creativity and increase their self-esteem. Our in-school outreach workshops are tailored to all school-aged children, grades K-12. Workshops most often cover our set of core subjects with a pre-established lesson plan, however custom lesson plans are created according to our partners’ curricular goals. Candidate’s work schedule is variable depending on the amount of workshops needing to be filled. This position requires travelling to off-site locations in the Denver Metro area.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position).

Essential Job Functions:

  • Instruct, encourage, support, and lead students in workshops that foster positive self-expression, builds self-esteem and promotes culture

  • Create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for students

  • Behave as a representative of the City of Lakewood and the Lakewood Cultural Center

  • Assist Outreach Specialist in preparing materials for assigned workshops

  • Reliably report for and maintain punctuality during workshops

  • Immediately notify supervisor of broken equipment or any unsafe conditions

Hours of Work:

Hours will vary based on the current needs of our Outreach programs. Most workshops are 1-hour long, with the opportunity for multiple workshops in one day.

Important Functions:

  • Works as a part of the team by supporting others and taking initiative

  • Attend all required staff/planning meetings

  • Other related duties as assigned

Organizational Relationships:

Supervision Received:

  • Receives supervision from the Cultural Programs Coordinator and the Art Education Outreach Specialist.

Essential Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • Ability to work with youth ranging from 4-18 years old

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, participants, and classroom teachers

  • Ability to develop engaging and inclusive curriculum and follow established lesson plans

  • Experience leading or assisting with art or dance programs/activities

  • Experience leading or assisting groups of varying sizes

  • Effectively support students of all skill and ability levels

  • Ability to teach culture-based arts lessons with sensitivity and thoughtfulness

  • Have good classroom management

  • Have an understanding of classroom safety

  • Have good communication skills

  • Have good organizational skills

  • Have access to a form of reliable transportation

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
