The primary purpose of this position is to direct a team of underwriting or underwriting support employees, utilizing broad limits of authority requiring a high degree of technical complexity and extensive knowledge in related underwriting products, applying a keen business acumen in directing the underwriting process within the highest level of authority.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Commercial Financial Institutions Underwriting Manager to join our dynamic team. As a Commercial Financial Institutions Underwriting Manager, you will be responsible for profitable growth in a 30-state region. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong background in Commercial Financial Institutions insurance to make a significant impact in growing our retail distribution & book of business.

Job Description

• Profitably grow Markel's Commercial Financial Institutions business in the retail channel;

• Assess and evaluate insurance submissions to determine exposure;

• Train & lead a team of 6+ underwriters and underwriting support specialists;

• Foster strong relationships with brokers in order to enhance Markel's reputation and market presence;

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as claims, legal, and Property & Casualty underwriting;

• Adhere to the rules, rates, forms, authority and underwriting guidelines as delegated by Product Line Leadership group;

• Execute distribution strategy as provided by Product Line Leadership group;

• Build and maintain strong working relationships across workgroups with flexibility to change direction quickly based on business needs;

• Maintain an understanding of assigned product(s), services and solutions and initiates discussions with other workgroups as appropriate;

• Drive change and innovation through continually seeking and implementing transformational solutions for customers and our associates.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 6-8 years of underwriting expertise;

• Minimum of 1.5 years of proven success in leading a team;

• Experience leading, developing and recruiting talent;

• Superior verbal and written communication skills;

• Collaborative management style;

• High energy, pro-active self-starter; someone with a strong sense of urgency;

• Demonstrated ability in setting and meeting objectives and getting peers and subordinates to “buy in” through superior influencing skills;

• Interpersonal skills necessary to achieve desired goals and to interact effectively as well as a high level of confidence, integrity, energy and enthusiasm, executive presence and a personality that fits the “Markel Style;

• Ability to travel 25%.

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Underwriting Manager position is $130k - $170k/year with a 45% bonus potential.
