Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The role of the Treatment Director is to administrate, direct and supervise the provision of mental health, substance abuse, sex offender, aggression management, and evaluation services to residents at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center (JCC) in order to promote their well-being and rehabilitation as well as reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

This position requires an advanced degree and licensure as a clinical psychologist, and in addition, may require advanced training or certification in a recognized specialty.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in clinical/counseling psychology with appropriate internship/residency and experience,
  • Licensure as a clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia or possess active equivalent licensure in another state/jurisdiction, and is license eligible and will obtain licensure within a year of hire;
  • Considerable knowledge of adolescent development and psychopathology as evidenced by an advanced degree in psychology.
  • Considerable mental health treatment skills and experience in provision of mental health services, including supervision of clinical staff.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of professionals and others involved with the care and treatment of high risk adolescents/children in a congregate care setting
  • Ability to work effectively in a leadership position in an institutional environment, either directing programs, sub-units (treatment teams), or departments;.
  • Ability and experience to direct and supervise clinical staff including psychologists, social workers, and/or substance abuse counselors, etc.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience providing mental health and crisis intervention services to adolescents, experience working with adolescents in an institutional setting and working with youth who have juvenile justice involvement;
  • Clinical and administrative supervision experience;
  • Certification as a sex offender treatment provider.
