The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled leader to serve as the TMC (Traffic Management Center) Supervisor in Tacoma, WA. Under the direction of the Freeway Operations Manager, this position is responsible for the daily supervision to the WSDOT Olympic Region TMC and the region’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), consisting of traffic operations, ramp metering, variable message signs (VMS), highway advisory radio (HAR), toll operations and moveable bridge supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. This position will assist assigned personnel in performing daily tasks associated with the regions ITS. The safety of the public and fellow employees is a top priority and must be considered in every decision and activity.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the TMC Supervisor will:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the TMC, a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) day a week facility; supervise staff.
- Prioritize and assign work to staff.
- Develop and maintain staffing schedules for TMC operations using computerized systems.
- Reviews daily TMC Logs for accuracy and completeness
- Review all TMC-entered maintenance requests-for-work into computerized systems.
- Ensure proper application of all Collective Bargaining Agreements, and all federal and state employee/labor laws.
- Recommend actions related to personnel issues and employment affecting subordinates; implements performance management best practices as needed.
- Ensure compliance with training requirements
- Review Project Plans, Traffic Analysis, Engineering Studies and Engineering Reports
- Lead the preparation of training materials used for TMC Staff
- Serve as a member of the WSDOT Incident Management Team (IMT)
- Provide coverage to a 24/7 operation which may require working various day, swing and night shifts as needed to ensure coverage and leadership support.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
- Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated experience applying engineering principles, methods, and practices to project management in transportation or construction environments. This includes expertise in design development, construction techniques, and/or contract administration.
- Project Oversight: Ability to oversee and review engineering designs and documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance with standards, and constructability.
- Technical and Digital Proficiency: Advanced skills in operating Windows-based systems and engineering software, including MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook), MS Teams, cloud-based platforms, and system databases for project tracking and information management.
- Communication Skills: Advanced skills in professional communication, specifically in communicating technical information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, virtually, by phone, and in person.
- Conflict Resolution: Ability to address and manage confrontational situations with composure, ensuring workplace challenges are resolved professionally and respectfully. Proficiency in de escalation strategies to diffuse tense interactions.
- Leadership: Skills to lead a diverse workforce by fostering collaboration across boundaries, building and maintaining effective teams.
