Job Description
AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented, and self-motivated Transportation/Transit Engineering Intern for employment on transit systems and innovative transit technology projects in our Dallas, Texas office. These projects are associated with Rail and BRT projects in the Texas/Gulf area as well as additional projects across the west region.
AECOM interns will work with members of the AECOM professional team and get immersed in the day-to-day design process of real-world projects. This internship will focus on transportation engineering concepts through engagement on design tasks across multiple disciplines including transit, roadway, Right-Of-Way, traffic, utilities, urban corridor, drainage, grading, traffic control, geotechnical, and structures. In addition to project design tasks, students will also gain experience in the preparation and development of construction documents including plans, specifications, reports, exhibits, and construction estimates.
Upon completion of an internship with AECOM, students will be equipped with the necessary tools to become a successful EIT and will have expanded their professional network which could be beneficial when starting a career upon graduation.
The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate knowledge in Civil/Transportation Engineering specific to transit, roadway and urban design, drainage design, grading design, traffic control design, and the preparation of construction documents, including plans, specifications, and construction estimates.
This position is expected to begin May 2024.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Researching city, agency, and DOT design standards.
- Developing engineering exhibits and plans using CAD software.
- Roadway Reconstruction and/or Traffic Signal Improvement Plans.
- Drainage Plans.
- Utility coordination.
- Reviewing as-builts, construction plans, and record drawings.
- Developing meeting materials, including meeting minutes and action item logs.
- Developing quantities and construction cost estimates.
- Coordination with the transportation planning team to conduct equitable public outreach, preparing materials and presentations.
- Assists with other duties assigned by senior staff and/or project managers.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with the intent to continue after the internship, unless graduating.
- Candidates must have completed 1 year of study in their program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in technical writing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and/or Bentley MicroStation, GEOPAK, and/or InRoads.
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, including ArcMap and ArcGIS Online.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Basic knowledge of transportation planning topics.

- Offered rate of compensation (Texas locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The hourly range for this position is $16.52-$25.00/hr.
