Test Design Engineer (Battery), Kuiper LEO Satellite

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

Key job responsibilities
We seek a highly skilled and motivated test design engineer to join our battery team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing test plans, equipment, and automation for the acceptance and qualification test campaigns for the battery packs used in current and next generation Low Earth Orbit satellites. Your expertise in testing will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of our Li-ion battery systems.

A day in the life
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary power team to define Satellite Battery Pack test requirements
• Design and operate novel test equipment (fixtures, chambers, test, GSE, automation) to perform comprehensive battery testing and scale into full rate production
• Author and execute comprehensive test plans to screen, validate, and qualify new Li-ion battery packs
• Analyze test data to gather information about battery packs and share findings with subject matter experts across stakeholder teams
• Maintain detailed documentation of test procedures, results, and observations
• Ensure adherence to safety protocols and guidelines during testing and handling of Li-ion batteries


About the team
The battery design organization is a product-oriented team that has been empowered to be entrepreneurial and nimble. The team owns the battery product life cycle from cell selection, to electrical interconnection, to pack structural design and test. We work with partner teams to define requirements, execute test campaigns to verify and validate our designs, and scale from new product introduction into full rate manufacturing.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in the design and operation of test equipment for hardware in the field of aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

- Familiarity with Li-ion battery cell and pack requirements (thermal, structural, mechanical, electrical, electrochemical) for space application
- Familiarity with applicable Li-ion battery tests for the space application via test standards (SMC-S-016, JSC-20793, etc.)
- • Proficient in design of experiments, root cause analysis, and statistical analysis using software tools such as JMP or Minitab
- Proficient in data analysis using software tools such as MATLAB, Python, or equivalent
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (NX, Solidworks, Creo or equivalent) and PLM software (Teamcenter, Windchill, or equivalent)
- Strong analytical skills and written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $93,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
