Optical Tooling Technicians are responsible for critical ship and module alignments and measurements using a variety of 3-dimensional and standard optic tooling.  These alignments/measurements are used to develop cut lines, align and install ship components, support machining operations, pair major modules and gather measurements to support ship certification. 

 

The job requires the Technician to determine the proper tooling for the job, move the tooling to the job, and complete the measurements outlined on configuration controlled requirements documents, while working safely with a high degree of accuracy.  The Technician provides the data to Accuracy Control representatives and works with them to confirm the solutions required.  Optical Tooling Technicians routinely interface with Engineering, other Trades, and Ship’s Management.  Therefore, the successful candidate must have good interpersonal and communication skills. 

 

Applicant will need to become proficient in the use of standard optical equipment, Total Station equipment (similar to land surveying), laser trackers, Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) arms and digital photogrammetry. 

 

This role requires travel up to 25% of the time to support ship schedules.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of experience using optical tooling for precision alignments and measurements

 

Preferred:

  • 5+ years relevant experience
  • Associates degree in surveying technology or engineering technology
  • Experience in precision measurement methods or surveying/optical tool use
  • Previous Metrology/Optical Tool Trade Training
  • Previous experience working in the construction industry or a manufacturing environment
  • Military/Navy experience
  • Metal fabrication experience
  • Military shipbuilding experience
  • CAD experience
  • Experience in surveying or machine shop dimensional inspection

Skills

  • Strong math background with a working knowledge of geometry and trigonometry
  • Basic computer skills
  • The successful candidate will have a solid background in surveying/machine shop dimensional inspection, proven math skills, computer skills, and good communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and work from complex manufacturing blueprints, technical manuals, shipyard procedures, and test documents.
