Purpose of the Position

The position holds a strong background in optical systems engineering. The Systems Engineer is responsible for evaluating different imaging modalities, and their suitability to Thorlabs customers, as well as designing optical systems to implement those techniques.  This role requires prior experience in designing optical systems, a good understanding of optical alignment required for Imaging Systems, and familiarity with related products. The job includes occasional participation in detailed technical discussions with customers, sales, and field service members.  Some travel to other Thorlabs locations may be required at times.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Work independently and collaboratively with other engineers to develop systems, prototypes, and tests Life Science Imaging Systems.
  • Follow prototype designs from conception through manufacture. 
  • Stay abreast of current industry trends and techniques relating to optical design, imaging, microscopy, and precision laser alignment.
  • Responsible for creating design documentation, including but not limited to: bills of materials, engineering drawings, testing requirements, and specifications for Imaging Systems and their related products.
  • Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing/design issues and implement cost reduction ideas regarding new and current company products.
  • Prepare technical data such as qualification test procedures, acceptance test procedures, reports, component maintenance manuals, etc.
  • Interact with Suppliers and purchasing department concerning supplied and proposed optical components.
  • Acts as a technical expert for both internal and external optical application support requests.

Requirements

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5-9 years of optical system integration and development
  • Experience with optical design, alignment, and characterization of microscopy systems.
  • Experience with laser scanning microscopes (Confocal, multiphoton), a plus
  • Experience in troubleshooting, instrument repair, or applications support, a plus

Education:

  • BS, MS or PHD in Systems Engineering, Optical Engineering, or equivalent

Specialized Knowledge and

Skills:

  • Strong optics knowledge related to the theory and design of Imaging Systems including fundamentals of designing lens relays for Imaging Systems, condensers, and objectives
  • Solid fundamental knowledge of inverted and upright microscopes and associated techniques in both wide-field and Fluorescence microscopy
  • Hands-on experience with assembly and troubleshooting of optical systems
  • Previous experience using Zemax design software, or equivalent required
  • Experience working in a fast-paced new product development environment.
  • Experience with process improvement and new process implementation.
  • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
  • High level of laser safety consciousness and situational awareness, preferable experience working with high power lasers.
  • Experience using optical metrology equipment
  • Self-starting individual with a strong attention to detail.
  • Flexibility/adaptability in a fast-paced & dynamic environment

  • Potential ability and willingness to occasionally travel to other Thorlabs sites.
