Responsibilities

NV5 is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Survey Field Technician (Instrument Operator) to join our Survey team in Charlotte, NC. This entry-level position provides an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in developing a career in land surveying and geomatics. The Survey Field Technician will work under the direction of the Party Chief and Survey Coordinator, assisting with field data collection, equipment operation, and survey support activities to ensure the timely and accurate completion of projects.

  • Operate survey instruments including total stations, digital levels, GPS equipment, and data collectors.
  • Assist the Party Chief with daily field survey activities on a variety of projects, including boundary, topographic, construction, utility, and transportation surveys.
  • Accurately record field measurements, observations, and survey data in field books and electronic data collection systems.
  • Perform field calculations and assist with survey computations as needed.
  • Set survey monuments, stakes, and control points according to project requirements.
  • Maintain, clean, inventory, and properly store survey equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist with downloading and organizing survey files and field data.
  • Follow project schedules and support the completion of assignments in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to company safety policies, procedures, and industry best practices while working in the field.
  • Communicate effectively with Party Chiefs, Survey Coordinators, project team members, and clients as needed.
  • Perform physically demanding field work in a variety of weather and terrain conditions.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Strong interest in land surveying, engineering, construction, or related fields.
  • Ability to learn and operate survey equipment and technology.
  • Ability to accurately record and organize field data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry survey equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

  • This position will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including weather conditions such as wet and /or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. 
  • Work will primarily be in the field involving long term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards at construction and project sites.
  • Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 10-12 hours a day on occasion.
  • Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk.
  • Weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required.
  • Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
