About the role

Under direct supervision performs delegated patient care functions assisting in surgical procedures and in the preparation of supplies and equipment in both the operating room and procedure rooms; and other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Successful completion of an approved Surgical Technologist training program
  • CORST (Certified Operating Room & Surgical Technician) certification preferred
  • Two to three years of experience in perioperative setting, preferably in an ambulatory surgery setting
  • CPR Certification is required

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1.Assists in the preparation of the operating and procedure rooms and in the selection of surgical instruments and equipment by reviewing the surgeon’s preference list and conferring with the circulating nurse to gather appropriate equipment.
2.Assists with counting needles, sponges and instruments to assure compliance with regulatory standards.
3.Ensures that all medications on the sterile field are properly labeled.
4.Ensures that all fluids are maintained at a safe temperature for care.
5.Ensures sterility of all items prior to use and maintains a sterile filed.
6.Prepares surgical specimens in accordance with departmental procedures and protocols, under the direction of the circulating nurse.
7.Under the supervision of the surgeon or R.N. assists with preoperative preparation of patients, such as skin preparation, draping and positioning patients for procedures in accordance with departmental procedures and protocols, as needed.
8.Under the supervision of the surgeon or R.N. assists in a variety of complicated and routine surgical procedures by assisting with gowning and gloving of surgical team, handing instruments to the surgeon as requested and/or required, and preparing suture material for use in accordance with departmental protocols.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
