About the role

Alabama Power Company is seeking a Disability Management Supervisor to lead medical services in the West Region of Southern Company service territory. Located in Birmingham Alabama, this position will be responsible for leading a professional group of occupational health nurses and support personnel to deliver consultations to employees and management on a variety of disability management topics. Consultation is provided on topics such as Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), disability benefits, workers compensation benefits, Americans with Disability Act (ADA), Department of Transportation medical standards, and medical privacy standards, etc. They will be responsible for maintaining an effective network of occupational medical service providers. When an injury or illness impacts the workplace, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with employees and managers in returning employees to work and enabling them to be safe, productive, and informed. This job reports to the Manager of Disability Management, West Region.

Responsibilities include:  

  • Supervision of a Disability Management (DM) Consultant team of Registered Nurses and Administrative Support. 
    • There is always a DM Consultant available in an “on call” status. Therefore, the DM Supervisor will be prepared to lead and support this 24/7 staff, as necessary. This will include occasional statewide travel. 
    • Lead the DM Consultants in day-to-day case management activity to help a workforce of approximately 8,500 employees productive and assist management in remaining compliant with related law, policies, and regulations. 
    • Lead the DM Consultants to mitigate the impact of on-the-job injuries to employees and company as relates to quick an appropriate medical care and return to work strategies.
    • Lead the DM Consultants in helping management successfully deal with employee health conditions and fitness for duty situations impacting an employee ability to work productively and safely.
  • Representing the company in system wide FMLA program operations (processes, databases, appeals, etc.) 
  • Assisting with the determinations (coverage, impairment, return to work) under Workers Compensation program by directing the acquisition of medical and accident information, as needed. 
  • Maintaining close and effective working relationships with Medical Directors and other business partners such as Labor Relations, Safety, and HR, Compliance, legal counsel. 
  • Guiding staff on disability related Human Resources policies (Sick Leave, Fitness for Duty, FMLA, disability Leaves, etc.) 
  • Identifying, negotiating, and partnering with external providers of disability services. 
  • Maintain a work environment that emphasizes professional excellence, teamwork, customer satisfaction and innovation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS       

  • Medical License in Nursing (RN) required
  • A four-year bachelor’s degree Nursing is preferred
  • Professional Certifications preferred (CCM, OHN, etc.)
  • The successful candidate will need to have at least 2 to 4 years’ experience supervising the work of others. In addition to proven skills in leadership, planning, organizing, and developing; it is preferred that the candidate have experience in leading a diverse and knowledgeable team of Healthcare Professionals and Administrative Support. 
  • Previous experience in directing the case management process is required. It is preferred that the candidate have experience specific to medical case management for occupational and non-occupational disability cases of employees. 
  • A strong knowledge of general medical practices related to injury and illness treatment is highly preferred. This includes:    
    • Knowledge of federal / state laws and regulations related to employment (ADA, FMLA, Employment Law) workplace safety, Alabama state workers compensation, and federal labor laws.
    • Knowledge of company policies such as Disability Leave, Sick Leave, FMLA, Safety policy.
    • Knowledge of company benefits such as disability compensation, medical benefits, time off compensation, etc.
  • A strong working knowledge of technology applications (Oracle, Service Now, etc.) related to disability case management.
  • The DM Supervisor must be able to lead, motivate, and direct the work of others in a productive and positive manner. 
  • Strong internal customer service focuses with passion to add value to accomplishments of the company and work groups.
