Overview
The Public Works Construction Inspection Supervisor supervises, plans, directs, and ensures the efficient execution of inspection and related activities for the Public Works department.
Essential Functions
1 Supervises, coordinates, and manages the activities of project managers, construction superintendents,
inspectors, consultants, and contractors to ensure overall project management, organization, and
construction.
2 Develops and approves schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals; recommends or adjusts work priorities, project schedules, resources, and work plans as required; inspects work for quality, evaluates work performance, and recommends awards for employees; gives advice, counsel, instruction, and identifies routine training needs for employees.
3 Performs challenging inspections and provides expertise and leadership for non-routine projects and technical issues; reviews licenses and permits to ensure all required documentation is current; assists, supports, and provides leadership for various inspection scenarios.
4 Analyzes, evaluates, and ensures inspection goals are met in a timely manner and works to increase productivity; oversees the identification of discrepancies and non-compliant issues while also ensuring the appropriate enforcement of rules and regulations.
5 Assists and supports the hiring process for employees and maintenance workers; attends and participates in job fairs and being on interview panels for new workers; evaluates staff and enforces disciplinary measures for field employees.
6 Provides quality customer service by communicating effectively with customers and responding to issues or concerns timely and professionally.
7 Performs any and all other work as required or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Knowledge of city, state, or federal codes, ordinances, rules, regulations and standards in construction and related projects.
2 Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
3 Knowledge of performing inspections and determining non-compliant issues.
4 Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
5 Supervising, coordinating, and facilitating inspection and related work for the department.
6 Ability to resolve challenging issues and provide technical expertise when requested.
7 Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
8 Ability to produce written documents/reports with clearly organized thoughts.
9 Ability to keep accurate records; comprehend and make inferences from written material.
10 Knowledge of customer service practices and principles.
11 Ability to assist and provide guidance for other personnel performing inspections and related work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) years of experience inspecting the design/construction of public works/public utilities projects.
AND
Two (2) years supervisory/project management responsibilities.

EQUIVALENCIES:
Associate degree in any field plus four (4) years of the required experience including two (2) years of supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Construction Management, or Business fields plus two (2) years of the required experience including two (2) years of supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field other than those listed above plus four (4) years of the required experience including two (2) years of supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.
