Brief Job Description (essential functions of the position):
Under the direction of the Commissioner or his/her designee, organizes and directs the maintenance and operation of city parklands and recreation areas under the operating responsibility of the Parks and Recreation Department and coordinates the maintenance programs with pertinent department divisions.
Responsibilities
- Directs through General Foreman, Foreman, and other employees, the maintenance of assigned parklands, park programming, regional and neighborhood parks, and athletic and sports areas.
- Coordinates maintenance schedules, major equipment assignments, activities of subordinates, and their individual responsibilities within the assigned region.
- Meets weekly, at a minimum, with the Director of Park Maintenance to review work schedules and identify and generate solutions to problems to ensure that performance goals and schedules are being achieved.
- Prepares budgetary and cost estimates for the maintenance manpower needs of the region for the presentation to the Director of Park Maintenance.
- Makes recommendations on specifications for the purchase of new equipment and supplies for the region to the Director of Park Maintenance.
- Approves requisitions for supplies and equipment from Foreman.
- Maintains a variety of records, including but not limited to time sheets, work schedules, expenditures, and equipment use.
- Prepares reports and attends meetings as required.
- Provides technical advice, assistance, and instruction to subordinates as required.
- Investigates and maintains documentation on public complaints pertaining to Parks and Recreation area maintenance.
- Handles personnel problems that have not been resolved at the Foreman or General Foreman levels.
- Ensures that departmental policies, procedures, and standards regarding maintenance, equipment use, and health and safety issues are adhered to.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- At least four (4) years of paid experience in Park Maintenance or related field, of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.
- A college degree in Park Management or related field may be substituted for the two (2) years supervisory capacity.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
- This position works out of Franklin Park Service Yard and applicant must be able to work any assigned shift and any assigned area.
- Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Drivers License.
