Bolton & Menk has an exciting opportunity for a SUE Field Supervisor to join our Emerging Markets & Services team.
As a Top Workplace, this position offers the opportunity to lead and support a growing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) practice that serves transportation, municipal, water, energy, and land development projects throughout the United States. The SUE Field Supervisor plays a critical role in the successful execution of utility engineering projects by leading field crews, overseeing utility investigations, coordinating project activities, and ensuring the accurate collection and documentation of subsurface utility data.
This position provides the opportunity to work in a dynamic field environment while collaborating with engineers, surveyors, technicians, contractors, utility owners, and clients across the country.
What You Will Be Doing
This position is responsible for leading utility engineering field operations, coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality utility data in accordance with industry standards and project requirements.
- Field Leadership: Lead multiple field crews on complex utility engineering projects and coordinate project activities across multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Utility Investigations: Perform and oversee utility investigations utilizing geophysical equipment to accurately designate and document underground utility infrastructure.
- Quality Level Management: Apply industry standards, including ASCE 38-22 Quality Levels, to utility engineering investigations and project deliverables.
- Traffic Control Coordination: Coordinate and implement maintenance of traffic plans and traffic control measures to support safe field operations.
- Vacuum Excavation Operations: Operate and oversee the use of vacuum excavation equipment and related tools, including vacuum trucks, jackhammers, compressors, concrete saws, air lances, and other specialized field equipment.
- Client & Stakeholder Coordination: Serve as the primary field representative for project teams, communicating and coordinating with clients, contractors, utility owners, and other stakeholders.
- Equipment Management: Manage the upkeep, maintenance, and operational readiness of vehicles, equipment, and tools assigned to the office.
- Project Planning: Conduct project reconnaissance, assess field conditions, and assist in developing project work plans and execution strategies.
- Survey Coordination: Coordinate and perform survey activities associated with Subsurface Utility Engineering services.
- Team Development: Supervise field staff, provide on-the-job training, and support the professional development of technicians, interns, and crew members.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate project documentation and records while ensuring confidentiality of company and client information.
- Travel: Travel to project sites and other project-related locations as necessary to support project delivery.\
What We Are Looking For:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Geomatics, or a related field preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), utility locating, surveying, construction inspection, or related field services.
- Previous experience leading field crews and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge of ASCE 38 standards and utility quality levels.
- Experience utilizing geophysical utility locating equipment and vacuum excavation equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic control practices and work zone safety requirements.
- Strong understanding of underground utility infrastructure, including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, electric, gas, and telecommunications systems.
- Ability to interpret utility records, engineering plans, survey data, and construction drawings.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.
- Ability to travel up to 90% of the time, including extended periods away from home based on project needs.
