Student - Prevention Education Fellow

The Prevention Education Fellowship of Butler University strives to improve Butler’s cross campus communication regarding mental and emotional health as well as power-based personal violence, healthy relationships, and consent education. The Fellow serves as student support staff for the Prevention Education & Student Well-being Specialist and as a point person and resource for various groups on campus. 

This position requires approximately 8 hours per week in a hybrid format at a rate of $12 per hour and is funded by the Division of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Student Affairs. 

The Fellowship has three components: Outreach, Engagement, and Communication. 

Outreach: The Fellow will sustain a public social media profile on Instagram for the office. The successful candidate will create and curate content that depicts positivity, self-care, healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and other advocacy related messages, as well as posts that increase awareness for ongoing related endeavors and upcoming events on campus. The Fellow may also create additional content for other platforms as deemed necessary by the Fellow and their supervisor. 

Engagement: The Fellow will work to identify gaps in educational advocacy programming in order to create and facilitate at least one educational event per semester. Topics as they relate to prevention education and well-being include, but are not limited to: supporting student mental health and self-care, preventing power-based personal violence (i.e. sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking), developing skills to assist someone experiencing hardship (i.e. trauma, mental health challenge, etc.), establishing bystander intervention strategies, and honing healthy interpersonal and communication skills (i.e. consent). 

Communication: This position will help strengthen communication and understanding between Butler’s Administration and the student body as it relates to student support issues. One way to do this is through participating in campus committees, such as the Student Advocacy Taskforce. This will help connect student opinions with professional staff to further develop support for students. This fellowship will also work to understand student opinion through the use of social media, question sessions, open office hours, and/or round tables so that members of various communities on campus can discuss important issues. 

Important Note: The Prevention Education Fellow is not a resource to help students through trauma, nor are they a Victim Advocate. This position is a liaison between different groups and can help guide students to appropriate resources. The Fellow is a mandatory reporter. 

What Traits We’re Looking For: 

• Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student status 

• Strong time management and communication skills 

• Interest and experience in topics such as peer education, communication, prevention education, mental health, and relationship building 

• Interest or experience in social justice, peer education, or advocacy 

• Comfort with or willingness to learn social media content creation 

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills 

• Experience with or willingness to lead presentations or events
