Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled Senior Structural Engineer - Bridges with a passion for their craft for our Western Pennsylvania Area (WPA) offices, which include Pittsburgh, PA, and Morgantown, WV.  If you are seeking a well-established, cohesive team and balanced, stable workload working on exciting and challenging projects, this is the opportunity for you!

In this role, the ideal candidate will act as a Structural Design Lead on a variety of exciting, often highly visible pursuits and projects across multiple clients. The individual will have overall responsibility for all structural aspects of these projects and inter-discipline coordination of all technical issues with other discipline leads from initial design through technical support during the construction phase. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all structural engineering technical aspects of pursuits and projects with other disciplines and in support of the Project/Design Manager.

  • Ensure the structural design is completed in accordance with the contract guidelines and design documents.

  • Establish structural scope, work plan and work schedule in support of the Project Manager.

  • Lead all elements of conceptual, preliminary and detailed final design of new bridges and rehabilitation or reconstruction of existing bridges.

  • Provide technical guidance and perform quality control reviews of design calculations, drawings and other contract documents.

  • Prepare and/or guide the development of technical specifications and construction cost estimates.

  • Manage groups of engineers, designers and/or specialists towards development of structural design documents and contract deliverables with minimal guidance or supervision.

  • Assure conformance with contractual obligations by ensuring that design documents are reviewed and approved prior to release to the client.

  • Train, mentor and develop staff and support career growth opportunities for staff.

  • Support marketing coordination and proposal preparation. Participate in proposal interviews.

  • Ensure that QA/QC procedures are being implemented and ensure the technical quality of deliverables. Lead responses to client’s comments on structural design elements of the deliverables.

  • Anticipate potential budget and schedule impacts and initiate plans for alternative actions.

  • Incorporate innovation in design and delivery.

Examples of some of the recently designed projects that our Western Pennsylvania Area structures group include, but may not be limited to, the following:

McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge Preservation, PennDOT District 11, Allegheny County, PA

A bridge preservation of a 9-span bridge including girder-floorbeam-stringer span and through-truss spans. Preservation activities include multiple steel repair and bearing to truss connection retrofits, attachment of new bridge mounted sign structures, conceptual temporary joints and conceptual jacking scheme design, expansion joint replacement and beam seat, backwall and approach slab reconstruction, deck modifications including an ADA curb ramp, fence replacement, concrete repairs, and downspout replacement. Construction is anticipated to start in 2026.

SR3007 and SR201 over I-70, PennDOT District 12, Westmoreland County, PA
