SmartThings is seeking a skilled Staff Software Engineer to join the Device Ecosystem and Ownership (DECO) Team. The DECO team develops the core APIs used by location interactions, transferring of ownership for locations and devices, and abstractions for certain device interactions. The team is at the center of our IoT strategy which actively evolves to meet customer expectations, adopt new standards, new compliance and certification requirements, and continuous business growth. As a member of the Device Ecosystem and Ownership, you will contribute to:
- Implementing microservices surrounding locations, ownership transfer, and device abstractions
- Expected to be attentive to scalability, reliability and performance for location management, ownership transfer requests, and device interactions
- Facilitating the many requests to support new features related to locations on our platform while keeping in mind the overall business direction of the platform
Key Responsibilities
This position is a hybrid role, based onsite 3 days a week at our office in Minneapolis, MN.In this role, your primary responsibilities will include the following:
- Working in all phases of the software development lifecycle from planning to deployment and support.
- Each SmartThings team has extreme ownership of their services. It is the responsibility of the team members to own ops, production support, on-call support, and system maintenance.
- Operate in a test-driven, continuous integration environment.
- Fulfill key strategic outcomes like reliability, quality, and testability.
- Openly collaborate with team members on design discussions and project execution.

What You Bring On Day One (Required Qualifications)
- B.S. or M.S. Degree in Computer Science
- 8+ years of experience demonstrating proficiency in Java, Kotlin, object-oriented design, and/or C-based/inspired programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, C++, Rust, etc.
- Strong experience with modern non-blocking/asynchronous server frameworks like Micronaut, Sprint Boot, Node.js, Spring WebFlux, etc.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Comfortable independently developing an understanding of an existing codebase in order to implement new features. Contributions to open source projects are a bonus.
- Experience with large complex microservice architecture and service-to-service interconnectability
- Experience with Linux systems.
- Experience in designing and developing RESTful APIs.
- Experience operating production services in a cloud-based environment like AWS or GCP.
- Comfortable deploying and managing infrastructure as code using Terraform.
- Excellent communication and people skills. Comfortable presenting to both internal and external executive audiences.
