Your impact

Handshake is building a diverse team of dynamic engineers who value creating a high-quality, high-impact product. We are looking for Staff Engineers who are excellent generalists with a strong focus on product development. You'll work on small, multi-functional teams with other engineers, designers, and product managers.

Your role

• We're focused on innovation within the core experience for students, employers, and universities, constantly improving our technical foundation and user experience. Your job may include:

  • Working with the Product Team and Designers to build an engaging and viral experience on both mobile and web for over 3 million of students across the country.

  • Working on one or more of the three sides of our marketplace to build high-value, robust premium features for companies ranging from Fortune 500 to Mom-and-Pop companies.

  • Developing and deploying large-scale web applications safely and reliably.

  • Solving challenging and unique problems with our dynamic three-sided marketplace: Students, Employers, and School Administrators.

You’ll work with these technologies

• Kubernetes, Terraform, GCP, AWS

• PostgreSQL, Redis, Pub/Sub

• Ruby on Rails, GoLang

• Plus the opportunity to recommend and use additional technologies as we scale such as Python, Kafka, Kinesis, or something in the MQ family (ZeroMQ, RabbitMQ, AMQP, etc.)

Your experience

• You prefer taking projects from inception to completion and are outcome-oriented.

• You act with empathy when partnering with fellow engineers and coworkers.

• You have 6+ years of experience in building full-stack web applications with a focus on back-end development.

• You are familiar with and passionate about software architecture patterns, such as Domain-Driven Design, Clean Code/Architecture, etc.

• You have experience working in distributed, performant, at-scale event-driven and/or reactive architecture systems.

• You have experience with data serialization / standardizing how data is exchanged between systems (e.g. Avro, Thrift, Json Schema, Protobuf).

• You are a strong engineer and passionate about how your technical decisions will affect product engagement and adoption.

• You appreciate good documentation and procedures.

• You are proud of your craft and enjoy and value clean code that scales to keep large teams productive.

Compensation range

$210,000 - $240,000

For cash compensation, we set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including geographic location as well as candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
