Position Summary

The Gross Lab in the Department of Chemistry at WashU in St. Louis is seeking a Staff Scientist. Our group develops and applies novel mass spectrometry-based methods (HDX, FPOP, etc.) for structural proteomics to understand protein interactions in pathology and physiology. Areas of interest include Alzheimer’s Disease, membrane proteins, and viruses.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Design analytical research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data. 
• Troubleshoot and maintain mass spectrometry instrumentation, including troubleshooting with equipment, instrumentation, and protocols. 
• Suggest technical or procedural improvements in research methods.
• Conduct literature searches related to research project. 
• Perform complex data analysis of proteomic data using a variety of sophisticated software packages.
• Maintain complete and organized records of data, experimental protocols, and the results of analyses. 
• Prepare final summaries of data and publication-quality graphs, tables, and charts. 
• Participate in writing manuscripts for publication and grant proposals for research support.
• Aid in mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, and postdocs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

• Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
• Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications:

Research expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly preferred for this position:

• Bruker, Thermo, and Waters MS software, including targeted proteomics.
• Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry-based methods, especially nanoflow.
• Ion Mobility.
• Experimental design for low-level samples, especially those collected from biological matrices.

Salary Range

$48,000.00 - $86,900.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
