About the Role
When news breaks, readers from around the world turn to The New York Times for trustworthy, authoritative coverage. Every day, journalists at The New York Times report more than 200 stories from dozens of countries around the world. Our journalism is consumed by over 100 million users each month.
We are looking for a staff level engineer with deep experience in the web ecosystem. You’ll contribute to a vital team in an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning. You will report to Soraya Dib and work cross-functionally with engineers, designers, and product managers.
About the Team
Our services power the presentation for 100% of our News content for nytimes.com and related mobile app webviews.
Our internal platform also includes a core monorepo, common components and libraries, observability & performance tooling, CI/CD, test automation framework, infrastructure, and security.
What You’ll Do
- Partner with other lead engineers to shape our ongoing web product strategy, architecture, and engineering culture.
- Provide technical leadership for high scale, high visibility projects within the team and across teams.
- Champion and coach industry best practices for engineering excellence, effectiveness, and efficiency.
- Partner with cross-functional leads to inform prioritization and long-term roadmap.
- Provide technical mentorship and peer support to other engineers.
Basic Qualifications
- 2+ years of tech lead experience.
- 8+ years of full stack web development.
- Experience building, operating, and monitoring complex, performance-critical web systems at scale in GCP and/or AWS. We support 60+ internal users and serve 45M+ pageviews/day.
- Strong experience with the JS/TS ecosystem, including:
- one or more Node.js frameworks (we use Express).
- one or more frontend JavaScript frameworks/libraries (we use React SSR).
- JS build tooling such as yarn, pnpm, turborepo, lerna, nx, webpack, and/or babel.
- Experience implementing CI/CD using industry standards (we use Argo, Github Actions, and Drone).
Preferred Qualifications
- Lean, DevSecOps, GitOps, etc.
- Kanban or other agile methodologies.

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
