Job Title: Staff Data Engineer

Fastly’s Strategic Operations Analytics team empowers leaders across the business with actionable data to drive key decisions. The team is working to expand and mature a best-in-class internal data platform. As a Staff Data Engineer, you will lead the evolution of our data infrastructure, optimizing pipelines on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), scaling ingestion of complex data sources, and establishing best practices for performance and reliability. This is an opportunity to lead impactful projects in a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative environment, supporting data analysts and business analysts across the organization.

What You'll Do:

• Architect and drive the evolution of our data platform, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability
• Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for data engineering initiatives
• Mentor other engineers, fostering technical excellence and professional growth
• Establish and enforce best practices for data architecture, pipeline development, and deployment processes
• Collaborate closely with data analysts and business analysts to understand data requirements and deliver impactful solutions
• Manage infrastructure-as-code deployments using Terraform and containerized applications with Kubernetes
• Continuously evaluate and implement tools and practices to enhance team productivity and data quality

What We're Looking For: 

• Significant experience in data engineering with a proven track record of delivering scalable data solutions. Most Staff level engineers at Fastly have at least 7 years of related experience.
• Advanced proficiency in Python, SQL, Airflow, and Google Cloud Platform services (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, etc.)
• Experience building data ecosystems that power broad organizational and operational decision making.
• Demonstrated experience as a technical leader -  leading full lifecycle initiatives, driving long term roadmaps, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders, influencing engineering best practices, and mentoring team members, etc.
• Experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform and container orchestration with Kubernetes
• Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience optimizing queries and performance in platforms like BigQuery
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a distributed team environment

 

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these: 

• Related tech industry experience or experience in transferable industries - i.e. e-commerce, technical research or incubators, etc. 
• Experience in small to mid-size organizations where you have hands on experience and decision making input on building and expanding the data ecosystem 
• Experience working closely with data analysts and business analysts to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions
• Familiarity with distributed systems and big data tools (e.g., Clickhouse, Kafka)

 

Work Hours:

• This position will require you to be available during core business hours and participate in an on-call rotation.
