Job Description
As a part of Uncommon’s Business Intelligence Team, the Specialist, BI will play a critical role in the team’s efforts by planning for, developing, implementing, and supporting strategic data reporting and visualization tools across the full scope of Uncommon’s staff and student data. The Specialist will lead communication with internal partners for their own workstreams and be the go-to person for information about reports and tools that they produce and support. These tools will be used to inform the work and decision making of the Executive Team, senior leadership and other Home Office, regional, and school-level partners. Ultimately, these tools should create new value and provide insights in service of our shared mission: to provide an outstanding education that prepares students to graduate from college and achieve their dreams.
Product Management & Development
- As the authority on their own workstream, work as a partner with instructional, operational, regional, and HO teams to identify, recommend, and implement solutions that provide data to drive forward organizational priorities
- Synthesize and translate instructional and business data needs into creative visualizations and tools
- Develop, maintain, and lead complex reporting, analytics, dashboards and other BI solutions (primarily in Tableau), navigating increases in the volume, diversity, and complexity of work
- Perform and document the details of data analysis, data validation, and data mapping/design by accessing multiple sources, specifically data residing in source systems, using whatever tools, programs, and resources necessary to execute or manage work.
- Provide application analysis and data modeling design to collect data for a centralized data warehouse
- Plans action steps and timelines for new or complex workstreams and independently adjusts plans when challenges arise.
- Extract data from databases and data warehouses for reporting and to facilitate sharing between multiple data systems
- Develop processes for the team that improve efficiencies or processes to facilitate streamlined delivery of tools to end users
Collaboration:
- Facilitate collaboration and communication with internal partners to understand data needs, clarify requirements, and navigate and resolve end user needs that are in tension.
- Collaborate with internal partners and team members to understand business processes and to evaluate the efficacy of reporting solutions with data about usage and value realized through benefits to end users
- Establish and maintain roles and responsibilities within reporting workstreams that inspire and hold internal partners and team members accountable for quality outcomes
- When needed, project manage reporting workstreams, including detailing project tasks, owners, timeline, and tracking project status, prioritizing effectively and escalating where needed
- Communicate results of data synthesis and analysis to business owners and team members in writing, seeking and accepting feedback. Incorporats feedback from one project into other relevant areas of work
- Proactively identify opportunities to offer expertise, identifying how and where to collaborate with other team members (including outsourced developers and owners of the data sources) to effectively deliver on workstreams, taking into account skills and capacity
- In case of stakeholder or team challenges, bring a recommendation when escalating problems; remain in the "driver's seat" to see solutions through.
- Play a leadership role in navigating difficult situations while maintaining effective relationships with all stakeholders
Qualifications
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Certification in Tableau or related competencies (BI, SQL, data management)
Experience Requirements:
- 2+ years of quantitative data reporting and analysis experience in any field (education sector preferred)
- 1+ years E
