Responsibilities
GENERAL SUMMARY: This position is for a database manager with a strong background in Microsoft Access. The main function of the candidate will be maintaining and managing a cable database that captures control system wiring information. The selected candidate’s primary interface will be U.S. Navy civilian In-service Engineering agents (ISEAs) and BIW planning yards.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage, update and improve functionality Machinery Control System (MCS), Electric Plant (EP), Engine Controller (EC), Damage Control System (DCS), Fuel Control System (FCS) and Ventilation cable, and Hard Wire Signal List (HWSL) database. Support functions include:
- Database Design and Maintenance: Develop and maintain the structure of the cable and Hard Wire Signal List (HWSL) database, including designing relationships between data tables. Update the database design as necessary to accommodate new data, queries and functionality.
- Data Integrity: Maintain and modify existing hull data in the Microsoft Access cable and HWSL Database, ensuring data accuracy and consistency.
- Backup and Data Protection: Create regular database backups to safeguard against data loss or corruption.
- Dataset Development: Generate new hull datasets from baseline data, incorporating all relevant modifications.
- SQL and Report Generation: Develop SQL queries and forms for specific data retrieval and generate advanced reports for review.
- Data Analysis and Organization: Organize modified datasets and perform data analysis to identify discrepancies using tools like Microsoft Access, Excel, and Beyond Compare.
- Database Automation: Develop automation for reporting, data queries, data entry, and manipulation using VBA code, Macros, and Expression Building.
- ISEA Review Reports: Generate Wire Connection List reports for ISEA review, incorporating feedback before delivery to BIW.
- Data Analysis: Compare WCL data across hulls and versions to find discrepancies and configuration differences to assist ISEA’s in Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs) review and Liaison Action Reports (LAR) creation.
- Ship Checks: Conduct thorough ship checks to verify hull-specific configurations for TDP and configuration matrix development.
- Database Functionality: Work to incorporate additional information such as Liaison Action Report (LAR), aligning wire and connector information specified in mil spec.
- Administrative Configuration Management: Maintain and facilitate configuration management (CM) process for waterfront test procedures and test plans.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in related technical field. 3-5 years of experience in MS Access Database.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Successful applicants must either have an active government security clearance or the ability to receive approval upon position acceptance.
- Must have a valid US passport or the ability to obtain one upon position acceptance.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is typically performed at client site locations in an office environment or control system test labs. Additional work may be performed onboard US Navy Ships (pier side and at sea), which requires proper safety precautions and ability to go up and down shipboard stairways (ladders); work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes, or equipment.
