About the role:
Machine Learning Infrastructure (MLI) is looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to bridge the gap between our Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) customer needs and our team’s offerings. MLI is composed of 120 engineers and the initial focus will be on improving MLE productivity / iteration speed. This work is instrumental in enabling Cruise to gracefully scale up its operations to more cities.
In this position, you will work closely with MLI area Technical Leads, Staff and Senior Staff Engineers, and our customer teams composed of over 200 MLEs. Through these collaborations you will solve one of the problems that is a bottleneck for Cruise’s city expansions - MLE productivity.
You will be setting the direction for MLI and many of its teams, working closely with our customers working on cutting-edge autonomous vehicle problems, and with high autonomy going deep in many novel directions to bridge the gap between applied ML and infrastructure.
What you’ll be doing:
- You will embed yourself, as needed, in customer MLE teams to deeply understand their workflows and identify tooling and infrastructure improvements. Your first goal will be improving our customer’s productivity.
- Collaborate with teams across MLI, learn their areas and offerings, foster a culture of customer empathy and support other Staff / Senior Staff Engineers in working closely with our customers to better identify and address their problems.
- Stay visionary. Lead the team to identify technical direction and build the vision and strategy for upcoming company pivotal milestones. Make sure that our team stays focused on the right MLE problems.
What you must have:
- You have 8+ years of end-to-end experience in working as a machine learning engineer to ship machine learning products at scale and have deep knowledge of the workflows involved
- Experience in building and leading platforms/infrastructure to support hundreds of engineers
- Technical leadership track record in leading and getting results from cross-organization initiatives
- Track record of owning processes end-to-end and working closely with customer teams on multi-quarter long projects

- Experience with working in the autonomous vehicle technology space
- Experience working closely with product managers and/or org leaders to set the strategy
- Experience building tools that are core to machine learning engineer’s daily work
The salary range for this position is $234,700 - $345,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
