About Your Role

As a Senior SQL Server Database Administrator you will own the reliability, performance, and security of our SQL Server platform across production and lower environments. You will partner with Development, SRE, and Security to set database standards, architect highly available solutions, drive automation, and mentor developers on scalable data design.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Strategic Architecture and Governance
    • Own SQL Server platform architecture (on EC2/RDS) including versioning, clustering, Always On AGs, and capacity planning.
    • Define and enforce database standards for schema design, indexing, naming, environments, and code-based migrations.
  • Reliability, Performance, and Observability
    • Lead advanced performance engineering: Query Store, execution plan analysis, wait stats, Extended Events, Resource Governor, parameter sniffing mitigation, plan guides where necessary.
    • Build robust monitoring and alerting with CloudWatch and Idera SQL DM; define actionable runbooks and dashboards.
  • Security and Compliance
    • Implement and audit data protection: TDE, Always Encrypted, least-privilege IAM/SQL roles
    • Define auditing/traceability (e.g., SQL Audit/Extended Events) aligned to SOC 2/ISO/HIPAA/PCI as applicable; coordinate vulnerability remediation
  • Development and Automation
    • Drive database CI/CD with code-based migrations (Flyway) integrated into application pipelines; enforce review gates and automated checks.
    • Automate with T-SQL/PowerShell for provisioning, configuration, backups, index/Stats maintenance, and drift detection.
    • Champion continuous performance tuning and schema evolution with safe rollout patterns (blue/green, canary, feature flags).
  • Collaboration and Leadership
    • Partner with developers to review designs, optimize queries/ORM usage, and guide refactors for scalability.
    • Mentor DBAs/engineers; deliver training on query tuning, indexing, and data access patterns.
    • Communicate platform health, risk, and roadmap to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Operations and Incident Management
    • Own production operations for the SQL Servers: backup/restore strategy, PITR validation, corruption detection (DBCC/Checksums), job orchestration, and on-call leadership.
    • Lead high-severity incident response and postmortems related to our SQL Servers; drive systemic fixes and preventative engineering.

Experience You Bring

  • 5+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server environments (2016+), with a combination of administration and development at scale
  • Deep expertise in: T-SQL, indexing strategies, execution plans, Query Store, Extended Events, and wait statistics
  • Proven HADR experience: Always On Availability Groups (multi-subnet/AZ), backup/restore design with tested RTO/RPO.
  • Strong AWS experience (EC2-based SQL): networking, storage (EBS), monitoring (CloudWatch), backup, and encryption (KMS)
  • Automation and DevOps: PowerShell/T-SQL scripting; CI/CD for database changes (Flyway/Liquibase)
  • Security/compliance: auditing, encryption at-rest/in-transit, least privilege, vulnerability/patch management.
  • Experience with observability/monitoring tools (e.g. CloudWatch, Idera, Datadog, etc.)
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder
