Position Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated “Senior Research Lab Manager” and experienced lab manager to join our team, Khaing Lab, in the Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology Department at University of Louisville. The candidate will have two major roles in the lab; to manage the lab independently, without Principal Investigator (PI) supervision and to conduct research activities.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Managerial tasks would include the purchasing and maintaining of essential lab equipment and consumables.

• Writing, reviewing, and maintaining of IACUC protocols.

• Training and onboarding of new personnel.

• Supervision of trainees.

• Producing grant reports.

• Contributing to manuscript preparation.

• Maintaining required records of controlled substances.

• Scheduling of lab events, inspections, meetings.

• Assisting with experimental planning and scheduling.

• Consulting with staff and PI on research plans and results. 

The Khaing Lab has multiple experimental arms related to spinal cord injuries, aging, bladder dysfunction, ultrasound imaging and advanced biorthogonal polymers.  The lab manager will need to be familiar with all on-going studies, scheduling, and their varying requirements simultaneously.

Scientifically, this position requires an individual with a neuroscience background and experience with rodent models with spinal cord injury.  The candidate should have advanced skills in rodent sterile surgery and microsurgeries, including, spinal cord injury, vascular surgery, and bladder surgery.  Experience with rodent behavioral testing and a thorough background knowledge of rodent behavior is critical for this position. Candidate should also have some experience viewing, evaluating and interpreting ultrasound images of the rodent central nervous system.  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in Biochemistry, or related field.

• Experience with developing, writing and maintaining IACUC protocols in rodents.

• Proficient in cardiac perfusion of laboratory animals, tissue processing, staining, and advanced microscopy techniques.

• Proficient in sterile surgical procedures and biometrics management during experiments.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Effective communication abilities, particularly in presenting scientific findings.

• Demonstrated ability to lead and work collaboratively within a team setting.    

• Publications or presentations in neuroscience or related fields are a plus.

• Commitment to advancing knowledge and methodologies in CNS injury research.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
