About the role
Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will lead the development of line layouts for various subsystem builds to identify and specify facility layout and utility requirements. This individual will work closely with engineering teams in specifying and building or procuring line equipment for Kuiper hardware builds.
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer is a technical leader of the team, providing guidance on many aspects including but not limited to testing requirements, production line design, facility planning, hardware design requirements application, process control, design for manufacturability, project management, and tooling design.
The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical setting and leads collaboration with other departments to reach the best solution to any problem and is able to technically challenge assumptions and requirements of these departments, such as dynamics and thermal analysis, design engineering, and tooling engineering.
Additionally, a Senior Manufacturing Engineer is expected to set objectives for the team overall, not only identifying the right long term strategies but implementing them on their assemblies and responsibilities, leading by example first and then by instruction. They'll have extensive experience in supporting the full development cycles of space hardware through development, QTP (qualification test procedures), and flight hardware ATP (acceptance test procedures).

A day in the life
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will spend significant amounts of time collaborating with design engineering, analysis, and tooling to develop robust build and test processes for new satellite assemblies. They will write build and test specifications, design and/or procure fixturing and tooling, address root cause of failures and issues, and implement production control strategies. They will spend time with the production team, first designing a production space and then implementing efficiency improvements and reducing non-conformances.

Key job responsibilities
- Working with engineering teams – plan line layouts for Assembly, Integration & Test (AIT), to intended throughput capacities.
- Material flow planning and manufacturing process definition – subsystems and vehicle level, build & test.
- Develop manufacturing processes for automated quality Statistical Process Control (SPC).
- Specify and procure various assembly equipment and systems to meet program development requirements
- Interface with facilities personnel in site development and all utility requirements definition.
- AIT takt time & cost optimization planning
- Definition & implementation of Work Order and automated documentation processes.
- Design For Manufacturing (DFM) review and sign off for design release
- Assist in hiring personnel (engineers and technicians) related to above tasking.

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, material science or other related discipline, or relevant experience
- 3+ years of technical leadership role in facilities and operations setup
- 5+ years of experience with developing space mechanical assemblies (or 7+ years of experience with space hardware build and development or 10+ years of experience in design and manufacturing of technically complex assemblies and products)
- 3+ years experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
- Experience with the project management of technical projects
- 5+ years experience in space deployment mechanisms
- Experienced with various automated manufacturing processes, including assembly and test methods
