Overview
For 25 years, the Building Movement Project (buildingmovement.org) has cultivated the potential for nonprofit organizations to effectively partner with movements for progressive social change. We learn by listening to groups and leaders about what it takes for organizations to align their social justice principles with their operating practices. Our research and practical resources help organizations innovate to meet the needs of the communities they serve and face the challenges of the external environment.
BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:
- Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;
- Service and Social Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to engage constituents in changing the systems that impact their lives;
- Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of nonprofit organizations in advancing movements for social change.

Responsibilities
The Senior Manager, Strategic Communications will lead a cross-functional team of professionals across the organization to ensure the strategic content development, placement, delivery and audience engagement for BMP’s reports, resources and tools, and helps to build and maintain the organization’s brand and reputation with all audiences. This role will lead a strategic planning process for brand development, engagement and outreach, and lead the development of content for all of BMP’s external and internal communications, including; digital outreach and management, new organizational website, as well as storytelling across various platforms and projects. This includes supporting our various teams and initiatives for sector-wide use and adoption, namely Race to Lead, Building Blocks for Change, and SolidarityIs. The Senior Manager, Strategic Communications will work with BMP’s Communications Associate to develop a strategy and implementation plan for partnership and stakeholder engagement to increase targeted communications that expand audience awareness of BMP and our resources for the sector. In addition, this position includes project tracking and task management. The role engages with a diverse group of important external partners, as well as the entire internal BMP team.
Essential Functions
Brand strategy development and management
- In partnership with senior leaders, develop an overall brand strategy and messaging that holistically represents BMP’s various projects and initiatives in a clear, consistent and concise manner;
- Develop and implement annual communications plan that supports BMP’s strategic and programmatic goals;
- Work with BMP staff to generate regular content and lead writing, editing, production, and execution of blog posts, newsletters, videos, articles, and messaging that reflects and elevates our efforts;
- Lead website development process for a streamlined communications platform that enhances BMP’s brand; eventually act as key point of content for BMP website maintenance, lead regular website content management, and provide active leadership through website redesign projects;
- Lead and support the BMP strategic communications workgroup, comprised of communications staff and program leads;
- Develop and regularly update BMP branding and style guide, including supporting consistent staff use of all logos, letterhead, and related materials;
- Create and maintain library of BMP assets and content across program areas.
Content development, outreach and people management
- Develop a streamlined and highly effective two-person communications team by leading and supporting the work of the Communications Associate;
- Position BMP as the “go-to” source for nonprofit sector research, relationships and tools on leadership, organizational change and movement building;
- In partnership with the Senior Leadership team, and under the supervision of the Senior Director, Institutional Advancement, develop thoughtful, creative outreach strategies to promote BMP’s work;
- Oversee and support the development of all traditional, new and social media content for BMP op-eds and other communication on behalf of the Executive Director, other senior leaders, and the organization as a whole;
