Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is a fast-paced, community-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to fostering the integration of the low-income, Pan-Asian immigrant and refugee community into the United States. Established in 1981, CMAA has been a cornerstone of the Uptown community, providing programming for generations of low-income youth, adults, and senior citizens. We offer direct services, including afterschool & youth mentorship programming, job training & placement, elder care services, and social services such as citizenship & housing services.
Job Description
Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is seeking a mission-driven Sr. Instructor to support our Adult Education Programs. The Instructor will teach ESL and/or ABE classes of varying English proficiency to prepare students for life, work, and further educational goals. This person will demonstrate skills in lesson planning and delivery, cross-cultural communication, and a commitment to working with immigrant and refugee populations.
Requirements
- Plan, organize, and teach ESL, ABE, Bridge, and/or ICAPS classes for limited English proficient adults - a mix of in-person and online per term, using online learning management systems for classroom instruction, a broad range of differentiated techniques, addressing Illinois ESL and ABE Content Standards, and ensuring that learners meet or exceed state-wide program metric.
- Provide curriculum and lesson modifications as necessary for ESL and ABE classes of varying English proficiency levels with support of management and Adult Education Team, updating according to student needs
- Monitor student attendance, goals, referrals, and testing needs; work with CMAA staff to ensure that students are able to access a wide array of support services
- Support student enrollment, retention, and success by assisting with intakes, registration, and student orientation; administering testing and assessments to evaluate student progress
- Support other instructors through planning, coordinating and/or leading internal professional development opportunities such as presentations and teacher round tables as needed.
- Support researching and exploring external professional development opportunities for other instructors as needed
- Mentor newly hired instructors, and conducting peer observations as needed
- Advocate on behalf of Adult Education students, providing working with Adult Education/Workforce Development team to identify opportunities for program growth
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (required)
- Previous experience tutoring or teaching adults with limited English proficiency
- Availability and flexibility to teach a mix of in-person and online, at varying times of day each term; the ability to adapt to changing work priorities
- Proven ability to work both independently and as a team member, cooperating with and demonstrating cultural sensitivity to staff and constituents
- Proficiency with Google platforms, Microsoft Office, and LMSs
- Fluency in a second language is a plus but not required
Work Environment
- This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
- This is a largely sedentary role, however, some filing is required. This could require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This position is a temporary position available immediately and expected until June 30, 2025. Permanent employment may be offered at the end of the duration.
The approximate salary for this position is $44,000.00/yr. Please note that the indicated base range is provided in good faith estimate for the position at the time
