Senior Estimator

This Opportunity 

 

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Senior Estimator for our 888 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA office that will report, full-time (5-days/week) to the LA Metro office. The expectation of the candidate is to provide realistic cost estimates to include gathering and analyzing the amount of money, time, materials and labor that is required to prepare cost estimates for complex projects utilizing alternative delivery methods and review estimates prepared by more junior staff.

 

Your Impact

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Analyze and identify scope of work from existing conditions, plans, and specifications through all phases of design and construction.
• Perform accurate quantity surveys for all types of construction systems and materials.
• Obtain labor rates, taxes and insurance requirements, as needed for estimate development.
• Develop contractor-style construction cost estimates and prepare basis of estimate as required by the Estimating or Program Manager.
• Ensure all estimates are accurate and have considered all risk factors.
• Review designs and specifications for cost-effectiveness and suggest appropriate alternatives.
• Create detailed, market related owner’s cost estimate for scope change, work delays, etc. for assigned projects.
• Assist the Resident Engineers and Project Managers with change analysis and development and / or validation of control budgets.
• Maintain an operating awareness of all contract issues and project participants.
• Participate in client and contractor negotiations to resolve contract changes and claims.
• Supervise and provide guidance and leadership to assigned managers and staff.
• Participate in client or 3rd party reconciliations.
• Write up technical reports, project updates, and proposals.
• Oversee and coordinate preparation of estimates for any magnitude of cost and to ensure accuracy and completeness of estimate.
• Provide proactive and strategic process and people leadership for the Project Controls – Cost Estimate team.
• Leadership of and accountability for administering and monitoring the cost estimate processes and procedures.
• Perform other duties and projects as needed.

 

Who You Are 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Applied Science, Civil Engineering or related field.
• 15 years' experience in construction estimating.
• 15 years' related experience in architectural/heavy civil/structural/utility elements for rail and transit projects.
• Demonstrated Experience with alternate project delivery types, such as CMGC, CMAR, Progressive Design-Build, and Design-Build.
• Demonstrated experience working on and supporting complex multi year / multi million $ projects and programs.
• Demonstrated skill/experience in development of Conceptual through Bid Documents crew-based or unit price cost estimates using Spreadsheet, HCSS Heavy Bid and/or Sage Timberline software applications.
• Strong knowledge of On-Screen Takeoff software and MS Office applications.
• Able to demonstrate progressively-increasing responsibility in estimating, working effectively with minimal supervision.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Working knowledge in use of HCSS HeavyBid or other estimating software.
• Estimating certification from AACEI or ASPE.
• Construction contractor estimating experience.
