Senior Engineering Technician positions at Tucson Water require an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) Certification from the State of Arizona to be obtained within 12 months of hire as a condition of passing probation. Failure to obtain the EIT during the probationary period will result in failure of probation or termination of employment.

Position Specific Summary

The Senior Engineering Associate position at the City of Tucson’s Water Department reviews and accepts water master plans and water construction plans for developer financed projects of commercial, residential, and industrial site development. This position manages and leads each project from inception through completion and uses various computer software tools to complete the projects. 

Work is performed under the supervision of the Engineering Manager.  This position leads and instructs the daily operational work of division personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads and guides the work of division personnel.

  • Reviews water construction and master plans for developer, industrial, commercial, and residential financed projects in accordance with department, city, regional, state and federal codes and regulations.

  • Performs hydraulic modeling for proposed new developments and existing water utility infrastructure to ensure the integrity and soundness of the water system.

  • Formulates solutions to complex engineering problems, evaluates alternatives and presents verbal and written solutions.

  • Coordinates with internal and external stakeholders involved in the design and construction of water distribution systems.

  • Applies working knowledge of principles and practices of municipal government administration and Tucson Water Standards to assure the accepted designs will contribute to the integrity and soundness of the water system.

  • Prepares and reviews comments and letters in compliance with the regulations and accepted engineering practices for financed projects.

  • Creates and maintains professional and interpersonal relationships and workflow management with internal and external stakeholders such as co-workers, outside agencies, consultants, developers, contractors, and public officials.

  • Performs research and analysis for prospective developers at sites with a focus on water and water infrastructure.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor's degree

Experience

Two (2) years of relevant experience

Equivalency

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

License/Certifications

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline

City, county, or state government; public or private utility experience

Proficient in computer software including Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBI, etc.), Geographic information systems (ArcGIS), computer-aided drafting and design programs (AutoCAD), and familiar with performing modeling of water systems

Experience in land surveying and construction (specifically underground utilities)

Experience with the design, review, and construction of civil engineering plans

Coursework in surveying and construction methods/technology
