About the role
About the RoleWe are seeking a strategic and hands-on Senior Database Administrator to lead the design, deployment, and maintenance of cloud-native database systems—primarily PostgreSQL on AWS RDS. This role is critical to ensuring data reliability, performance, and compliance across our distributed infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with DevOps, Security, and Engineering teams to architect scalable, audit-defensible database solution. Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states - CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option. We hire the best software engineers, but experience in our stack can’t hurt: NinjaOne is built on Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang and Postgres, supporting millions of user endpoints and running as a scalable cloud service in AWS. Knowing large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design and client-server architecture will help you. What You’ll be Doing
- Design, implement, and maintain highly available PostgreSQL databases on AWS RDS, including replication, backup, and disaster recovery strategies
- Optimize database performance through query tuning, indexing, and storage configuration
- Automate provisioning, backups, and maintenance tasks using scripting and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
- Monitor and troubleshoot database health, replication, and connectivity issues across multi-region deployments
- Implement database security controls, IAM roles, encryption, and compliance-aligned retention policies
- Collaborate with DevOps to integrate database operations into CI/CD pipelines
- Maintain audit logs, schema versioning, and change tracking for regulatory compliance
- Lead database migrations, upgrades, and patching with minimal downtime
- Partner with data engineering teams to support data lake ingestion and warehouse optimization
- Develop and maintain technical documentation and architectural decision records
- 10+ years of experience as a Database Administrator, including 2+ years in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred)
- Deep expertise in PostgreSQL internals, performance tuning, and replication
- Hands-on experience with AWS RDS, including parameter groups, snapshots, and monitoring
- Proficient in scripting for automation and observability (Bash, Python, or similar)
- Skilled with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform or CloudFormation)
- Knowledge of database security and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA, etc.)
- Excellent troubleshooting and communication skills across technical and non-technical teams
- Experience with Aurora PostgreSQL or other managed database services (preferred)
- Familiarity with containerized or distributed systems (Docker, Fargate, Kubernetes) (preferred)
- Exposure to cross-cloud or hybrid data strategies and modern data platforms (Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery, etc.) (preferred)
