Job Summary

The Senior Data Scientist applies advanced analytics, predictive modeling, and data science techniques to solve complex Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance business problems. This role partners closely with business and technical stakeholders to develop insights that improve pricing accuracy, underwriting performance, claims efficiency, and overall risk management.

 

 

Work Location

This position offers both remote and hybrid work locations.  Candidates who reside within 50 miles of an office location (West Bend, Madison, Appleton) will be offered a hybrid work schedule.  Candidates who are fully remote (beyond 50 miles) may occasionally be asked to travel to an office location for in-person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and corporate events. 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain predictive models, algorithms, and analytical solutions supporting pricing, underwriting, claims, and other P&C insurance functions
  • Apply advanced analytics and machine learning techniques to identify trends, risks, and business opportunities
  • Translate business and strategic objectives into clear analytics, reporting, and data requirements
  • Analyze large, complex datasets (structured and unstructured) using SQL, Python, Spark, or similar tools
  • Document, present, and explain modeling methodologies and results for business partners and regulatory review
  • Identify, evaluate, and integrate internal and external data sources to meet business needs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver practical, production-ready analytical solutions
  • Promote analytics best practices and provide consultation on data-driven initiatives
  • Evaluate third-party data, models, and analytical tools in partnership with vendors

Required / Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of advanced analytics, data science, or predictive modeling experience
  • 3+ years of Property & Casualty insurance experience (strongly preferred in commercial P&C pricing, rating, or risk-tiering models)
  • Strong knowledge of P&C insurance data, data sources, and business processes
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SAS, or similar statistical programming languages (experience with at least two preferred)
  • Experience working with large datasets using SQL, Spark, or cloud-based data platforms
  • Familiarity with MLOps and machine learning platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, Dataiku, or similar
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex analytics to business audiences
  • Self-motivated, analytical, and collaborative mindset

Education & Credentials (Preferred)

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or a related field
  • P&C insurance credentials such as ACAS, FCAS, CPCU, or CSPA

Salary Statement

The salary range for this position is $140,000-$180,000.   

  

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.  Compensation decisions are made by West Bend and are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
