Summary

The Department of Public Works is seeking Seasonal Equipment Operators to support a variety of short-term assignments across multiple operational settings. These extra-help/recurrent positions are typically filled on a temporary basis for up to six (6) months, depending on organizational needs.
Seasonal Equipment Operators may be assigned to support a range of projects, including maintenance, construction, and emergency response efforts. Work locations and assignments may vary and can include urban, rural, or remote areas. Schedules will fluctuate based on operational demands and weather conditions; there is no guarantee of minimum hours, and incumbents may be required to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Operating medium to heavy equipment in support of maintenance, construction, or emergency response activities across varying terrain and weather conditions
- Assisting with special projects or temporarily performing duties aligned with higher-level equipment operations, as needed
- Performing basic equipment inspections, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance
- Maintaining simple records related to time worked and equipment usage
- Supporting emergency or seasonal response efforts, such as debris removal, drainage clearing, erosion control, or other weather-related operations
- Performing routine maintenance tasks, which may include road or facility upkeep, vegetation management, traffic control, and general labor as needed
License: Must have a valid Class C Driver License at time of application and a class A or B learners permit at time of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid California Class B (or higher) Driver License with a tanker endorsement AND no restrictions for air brakes and manual transmission within 120 days of hire or be terminated. Some positions may require a valid California Class A driver license with appropriate endorsements/restrictions. The DOT mandates drug testing of all employees in jobs requiring a Class B or higher driver license.
