About the role

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • Performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Assists the professional and technical nursing staff by performing any delegated duties, specialized procedures, and assists with care of seriously ill patients. Is assigned to an RN to shadow for each shift worked

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Director of Education and Nursing Excellence

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Under the direction of the RN provides physical patient care in a safe manner.
  • Notifies RN of abnormal variances of data (vital signs, pain, etc.)
  • Provides selected delegated tasks (Example: bedside blood sugar)
  • Concisely utilizes basic decision making skills with critical thinking to complete routine tasks.
  • Partners with RN for enrichment learning opportunities.
  • Turn in Extern evaluation forms at least twice a month to Extern Coordinator.
  • Responds in a timely manner to Extern coordinator.
  • Notifies Extern Coordinator of scheduled days on the floors.
  • Notifies Extern Coordinator of needed time off, changes in schedule or clocking errors in a timely manner.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Student must have completed the first semester of clinical in an approved School of Nursing.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret clinical reports and medical data; Ability to respond to common inquiries and complaints from patients. Ability to communicate with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work requires a variety of physical activities including standing and walking for sustained periods, bending and stooping, and some lifting of 50-100 pounds at a time
  • Work requires a variety of physical activities including standing and walking for long periods of time, bending, stooping and lifting.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
  • Must have normal hearing or utilize adaptive hearing devices.
