The Clinical Coordinator Cath Lab is a registered nurse who functions under the direction of the Director or Manager Cardiovascular Services. He/she is responsible for the coordination of the day to day functions and activities of all nursing and cardiovascular specialist functions in the Cath Lab. The Clinical Coordinator serves as a resource/support to the staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments. Manages staff schedule, call schedule, case load/schedule and stats related to the Cath Lab. Performs a variety of administrative functions in support of the Director. He/she is responsible for performing or assisting on a wide variety of clinical procedures requiring independent judgment including utilization of specialty equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.
The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for coordination and implementation of the nursing process based on expanded knowledge and experience. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for providing and coordinating patient care with an understanding and awareness of age specific needs. The Clinical Coordinator coordinates the educational needs of the patient, family or patient support system, including biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial needs. The Clinical Coordinator will successfully collaborate with multidisciplinary, specialty and physician groups. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for regulatory compliance and readiness as well as quality and patient safety initiatives. The Clinical Coordinator provides direct patient care as needed in the Cath Lab.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Clinical Skills
- Uses critical thinking skills.
- Delivers patient care in complex, multiple problem patient care situations
- Preps the patient for procedure.
- Demonstrates and understands sterile and aseptic technique.
- Demonstrates ability/proficiency to fulfill role of circulating nurse and monitor during all procedures in the Cath Lab and all equipment/software used in this role
- Demonstrates ability/proficiency to fulfill/learn the duties of the scrub role during all procedures in the Cath Lab and all equipment/software used in this role
- Demonstrates proficiency in core skills/competencies of a registered nurse
- Must be able to take Cath Lab call rotation
- Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies and procedures. Verifies written orders, seeks clarification if unclear.
- Appropriately disposes of all special wastes including sharps, chemo, etc. per hospital policy and procedure.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the administration of medications and moderate sedation given in the Cath Lab per policy and procedures.
- Recognizes and reports appropriately EKG and hemodynamic changes.
- Maintains integrity of sterile field and exhibits knowledge of sterile procedures.
- Performs QC of the ACT (activated clotting time) machine and GEM OPL oxygen saturation machine for both optical and liquid. Documents appropriately and accurately. Communicates with Laboratory regarding discrepancies and regulatory issues.
- Opens and closes interventional suite, cardiac cath lab and recovery areas, documenting accordingly. Assess and follows through replacing supplies. Performs defibrillation and crash cart checks.

- Verifies patient ID using 2 patient identifiers e.g.. armband, DOB, verbal identification.
- Verifies written orders, seeks clarification if unclear.
- Understands and complies with verbal order RBAC and performs necessary follow-up with written order.

- Understands and complies with site/ side marking when indicated
- Interprets, supports, and implements system and departmental SCIP initiatives
