About the role

Position Summary:

The River Operations Coordinator is responsible for the management and facilitation of the college river program – Fort Lewis on the Water (FLOW). Primary responsibilities include overseeing all operational logistics for all river trips (both academic and co-curricular), as well as developing and implementing all such programming. Additionally, this position works directly with the Assistant Director of Recreational Services—Outdoor Pursuits to ensure that the college is compliant with the various river permit stipulations.

Job Description:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Recreational Services to manage the FLC river program.
  • Oversee all river trip logistics for both academic and co-curricular programs including but not limited to; 
    • Maintain bulk food and consumable supplies (i.e. stove fuel)
    • Oversee the purchase of food for trips
    • Oversee the packing of all river equipment (i.e. rafts, coolers, frames, etc.)
    • Prepare all trip related administrative paperwork
    • Maintain and resupply first aid kits
    • Arrange vehicle and trailer rentals including trip shuttles
  • Work directly with the Assistant Director of Recreational Services to maintain legal access and permits on all FLC permitted river corridors.  Be current on federal, state and local agencies and individual entities’ river corridor regulations and cultural and natural resource protection.
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with the river managers.
    • Prepare and submit permit applications and operating plans to all river management agencies.
    • Prepare and submit annual use reports to river management agencies.
    • Communicate river use to all river management agencies.
    • Ensure prompt payment of all permits and use fees.
    • Maintain current databases on all permits, including required certifications for staff operating within an agencies jurisdiction.  (WFR, CPR, Utah Boatman’s License, etc.) 
    • Disseminate information and educates all FLC staff, faculty and students that utilize river corridors on issues, laws and regulations regarding permitting, access and good stewardship practices.
  • Assist with the development of all river education program risk management, safety standards and the production of internal documentation and manuals.
  • Assist in development of curriculum-based and co-curricular river programming.
  • Recruit and train trip leaders and assisting guides (i.e. river guide school, swift water training, driver training, etc.).
  • Manage, maintain and repair all river associated equipment.
  • Market the program to potential FLC users, as well as assist with curriculum development and trip plans for academic programs.
  • Maintain the river operations facility (equipment storage and food area, etc.).
  • Maintain records, prepare and analyze statistical reports, evaluation, participation surveys, and program manuals. 
  • Manage, maintain, operate and coordinate staff training for the van and trailer operations. 
  • Maintain, at minimum, current Wilderness First Responder or above and CPR certifications. 
  • Maintain a current State of Colorado Driver’s License.  Pursuant to this requirement, the employee is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing per Fort Lewis College Business Policies 4-12 and 4-14. 

Administration 

  • Contribute to a comprehensive marketing strategy that promotes recreational opportunities at Fort Lewis College. 
  • Develops annual goals with appropriate evaluation and assessment metrics to demonstrate progress. 
  • Demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills with diverse customers from students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and College guests. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities. 
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508. 
  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Required Education, Specialized Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of demonstrated working/life experience in related outdoor programming.
  • Outdoor skills and experiences with the ability to instruct and facilitate river guide school (both paddle and oar) and swift water rescue courses.
