About the role

The Department of Genetics is seeking a Research Technologist who will serve as a laboratory technician under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager and will assist in all aspects of laboratory experiments by following stablished procedures and protocols. The position involves a basic understanding of molecular biology techniques, the ability to apply basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and identify situations needing special attention.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follows routine protocols under the supervision and mentorship of the Laboratory Manager and senior members of the lab.
  • Perform lab tests and experiments following established procedures or protocols to perform: DNA and RNA isolation using robotic workstations; quality control analysis of DNA and RNA samples by spectrophotometric analysis, capillary electrophoresis, and agarose gel electrophoresis; polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for polymorphism analysis, cell line authentication, mycoplasma testing, generate cDNA, Pyrosequencing and Sanger sequencing, setup whole genome amplification reactions, NGS library preparation.
  • Assure strict quality control of all samples processed for service requests.
  • Complies with lab digital notebook policies and good record keeping.
  • Operate standard and specialized equipment dedicated to laboratory services including, but not limited to: Perkin Elmer MSM I, QIAcube, MycoDtect scanner, Advanced Analytical Fragment Analyzer, TaqMan 7900, Integra Viaflo 96, centrifuges, pH meter, analytical balance, pipettes, spectrophotometer, fluorometer, electrophoresis equipment, digital photography equipment, and DNA thermal cyclers.
  • Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
  • Sample management to include database entry, cataloging of samples, fulfilling requests for preparation and shipment of samples stored at our facility, and organization and preparation of DNA for 96-well plating projects.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures as required for experimental protocols.
  • May participate in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Recognizes test result or instrument function problems that require additional troubleshooting, performs troubleshooting, or seeks additional assistance as appropriate.
  • Support of team members with sample processing and assays as needed.
  • Generate customer reports by compiling, organizing, and categorizing data and interpreting results.
  • Responsible for interacting with customers, which may include faculty/primary investigators, technicians, students, and post-doctoral fellows to communicate procedures for submission of samples, to clarify details of service requests, and to release results.
  • Uses safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance of equipment. Use computer software applications to analyze and assemble data.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements 

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters, lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc.
  • Ability to move about workspace.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 HRLY ($43,160 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
