The Opportunity

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines invites applications from qualified candidates for a Research Tech Pro to work primarily with Professor Carl Frick beginning Spring 2024. The overarching focus of this position will be to conceptualize, fabricate, experimentally characterize and mechanically evaluate a mechanical apparatus for recoil measurement device. This is a full-time, benefitted position with an estimated term of between 1 and 3 years as funding allows.

Primary Responsibilities 

• Conduct research on the development of recoil/firearm measurement device(s) for bi-pod, tripod and unsupported firearm platforms.

• Conduct research on the development of energy-absorbing materials within the context of ballistics research and firearms.

• Conduct research on the optimization and evaluation of various firearm platforms.

• Machine components and integrate DAQ with existing firearm platforms for development of measurement apparatus.

• Prepare and make presentations to industry on this research.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering

• Proven knowledge of computational modeling software involving damage and micromechanics simulation of composite layups, and stress analysis, such as Abaqus.

• Proven knowledge of development, and manufacture of recoil measurement devices for firearm applications.

• Machining experience, including CAD, CNC.

• Previous training in the handling, evaluation, testing and safe operation of firearms, including both civilian and regulated platforms. This is to include previous armorer/operator training as provided by original equipment manufacturer.

• Demonstratable expertise in field stripping, operation, and maintenance of M249, M240, & M2 firearms.

• Current holder of FFL 01 and special occupational tax status for procurement of and research and development efforts with NFA-regulated items, (SOT III) minimum.

Annual Rate and Benefits 

$75,000 per year
