The Research Lead Technician will contribute to several projects which broadly focus on either zooplankton dynamics in Lake Erie or phosphorus cycling in streams. For the zooplankton project, the Research Lead Technician will count Bythotrephes, help manage the SQLite database (interfaced with through R), and oversee the day-to-day activities of undergraduate workers. For the phosphorus cycling projects, this technician will lead field surveys for our Pilot Watershed project and assist with field surveys associated with a project focused on the Maumee River. The Research Lead Technician will also be responsible for designing and implementing laboratory experiments measuring P uptake/release rates for stream sediment and algae. They will analyze dissolved nutrient samples with a SEAL autoanalyzer and particulate carbon and nitrogen samples with an Exeter CHN analyzer. For both projects, the Research Lead Technician will be responsible for providing assistance and training to less experienced colleagues, and independently anticipating, recognizing, and solving routine issues, in addition to unusual or infrequent issues or questions.

Required

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required in ecology or related field; 5 years of relevant experience required with High School diploma or GED, 3 years of relevant experience required with Associate's Degree, or 1 years of relevant experience required with Bachelor's Degree. One year of experience conducting research/management in ecology or water quality with a focus on any combination of the following: (1) enumerating invertebrate taxa, preferably zooplankton, and (2) researching or measuring aspects of aquatic nutrient biogeochemistry. Also required: basic statistical and data management skills and demonstrable ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desired Qualifications

Graduate-level training in ecology or related field. Two years of experience measuring phosphorus cycling; ability to run a nutrient autoanalyzer (e.g., SEAL, Latchet, Alpkem); proficiency with the R statistical language and SQL (structure query language) databases, including the ability to write R and SQL code for entering, querying, and manipulating data from an SQL database, as well as to implement corrections or structural changes in SQL databases for research purposes; ability to identify Great Lakes zooplankton.

The pay range for this job profile is $22.93 - $29.95. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
