The Position

At Roche, we are working to make next-generation sequencing simple and accessible enough for routine use. By accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay menus, we are broadening access to genomic data and lowering barriers to adoption. From robust sample isolation and preparation tools to novel sequencing technology and advanced bioinformatics, we are developing differentiated, highly integrated end-to-end solutions for next-generation sequencing, resulting in a sample in, result out workflow.

Our Systems Technology Group, a part of Roche Sequencing Solutions, is focused on creating and advancing technologies to significantly enhance DNA sequencing workflows. We are seeking an enthusiastic, team-oriented Research Engineer II to join the effort. As a Research Engineer II, you will tackle a variety of tasks and projects that will help us advance our technology and hardware related to our next-generation DNA sequencing systems.

Your efforts will cover many aspects related to the fabrication, assembly and testing of custom devices, fixtures, breadboards and prototypes. 

The Opportunity

  • You will be fabricating parts and devices using CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing and other shop and prototyping tools 

  • You will be operating, repairing and maintaining various lab equipment and instruments, including custom systems such as breadboards and fixtures

  • You will be conducting various microfabrication processes such as photolithography, etching and bonding

  • You will be testing, characterizing, optimizing and troubleshooting devices and systems

  • You will be collecting data, documenting observations and helping to analyze, interpret and present results

  • You will be utilizing various types of metrology instruments to characterize parts and evaluate manufacturing methods

  • You will be generating test plans, protocols and reports

  • You will be collaborating with other scientists and engineers

Who You Are:

(Required)

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering or closely related discipline with 1-5 years of relevant research and early development experience in the life science industry.

  • You have demonstrated experience running PCR, qPCR, and dPCR instruments and interpreting their results

  • You have demonstrated experience with nucleic acid extraction methodologies and purification techniques

  • You have demonstrated experience with the following laboratory tools:, Bioanalyzer or TapeStation, Qubit Fluorometer, and NanoDrop UV-Vis Spectrophotometer

  • You have demonstrated experience building, operating and troubleshooting instruments, fixtures, and breadboards with fluidic, pneumatic, thermal and optical subsystems

  • You have demonstrated experience with Python scripting for hardware control 

  • You have demonstrated experience working in a cleanroom performing lithography, etching, and bonding processes   

  • You have a demonstrated understanding of engineering and chemistry fundamentals. 

Preferred:

  • You have experience with SolidWorks and CAM software

  • You have experience with DNA sequencing workflows 

  • You have are detailed oriented with a desire to learn and be challenged.

  • You have a positive, friendly, proactive attitude and a passion for science and technology

  • You have strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently 

  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively influence cross-functional stakeholders.

  • You have experience across multiple product life-cycle stages.
